Building Long-Term Value for Accountants, Not Just R&D Claims
I started this series by explaining why I built PSS around being willing to say no. I want to close it by explaining what I actually want the relationship to look like once the answer is yes, and beyond, because I don't think it should end with a single claim.
An R&D Claim Is a Single Moment. A Partnership Isn't.
A claim has a beginning and an end. It gets assessed, built, submitted, and eventually concluded. A genuinely useful specialist relationship doesn't work on the same timeline. It should still be adding value between claims, not just during them.
That's why our involvement extends well beyond individual submissions. Regular legislative updates, so you're never caught out by a change you didn't know about. Technical training, so your wider team feels genuinely confident raising innovation with clients rather than leaving it entirely to us. Support with complex conversations, and access to a broader network of expertise when a client's needs extend past R&D specifically, whether that's Patent Box, capital allowances or wider innovation funding.
Why This Matters More Than Another Claim
Accountants don't need another provider who shows up once a year. You need a relationship that makes you look better in front of your clients consistently, not just when a claim happens to be in progress. That's a genuinely different objective, and it shapes almost everything about how we work.
It's also, honestly, better for us. A relationship built around one transaction at a time is fragile. One built around ongoing trust tends to last, and it gives us the chance to actually understand your clients well enough to spot opportunities you might otherwise miss.
Where I See This Going
I don't think of PSS as an R&D consultancy that occasionally does other things. I think of us as a specialist partner that happens to have started with R&D, because that's where the clearest need was, and where we could add the most value from day one.
Where we go from here is building on that foundation properly, through the same principles this whole series has been about. Assess honestly. Build claims that hold up. Stand behind the work. And treat every accountant relationship as something worth investing in for years, not just for the length of a single claim.
A Genuine Thank You
If you've read this far, through all ten pieces, thank you. I hope it's given you a clearer sense of how we think, not just what we do. That was always the point.
This article provides general information only and does not constitute tax, accounting or legal advice. R&D tax relief depends on the facts, the accounting period and the legislation in force. Businesses should obtain advice based on their specific circumstances before making a claim.
Not sure whether a client qualifies?
We would rather have that conversation before anything is submitted than after HMRC starts asking questions.
