The Simple Test
Routine IT support, migrations and installations aren’t R&D. But MSPs can encounter significant technological uncertainties when standard products, platforms and documented approaches cannot achieve the required result.
Look for occasions where technical teams had to go materially beyond normal configuration and develop new or appreciably improved technical methods, tools, architectures or integrations.
MSPs & Managed IT
Don’t rule it out just because…
They’re an MSP rather than a software company
Microsoft/Azure/AWS technology was involved
The development was for an internal tool
The project began as a normal customer migration
Existing products formed part of the solution
Only the escalation/engineering team performed the R&D
R&D vs probably not R&D
Potentially R&D
Developing bespoke migration and synchronisation tooling because established vendor tools couldn’t reliably preserve and reconcile data across incompatible legacy and cloud environments.
Probably not R&D by itself
Migrating a customer to Microsoft 365 using established Microsoft migration tools and documented procedures.
